Service Arrangements

In-Ground Burial

When making arrangements for in-ground burial, please contact the cemetery office as soon as possible to verify ownership/right to burial and grave space availability. Ownership must be established by submitting a copy of the Right of Interment (Deed). If you are requesting burial on a family plot the space must have been previously reserved for the deceased in writing, otherwise, lineage to the original purchaser must be established.

Once right to burial has been established and the service date and time have been confirmed with the Church and funeral home, notify the cemetery accordingly. At this time you may also make an appointment to visit the cemetery to complete the necessary paperwork and to submit payment. Payment in full is required before services can be rendered.

Vaults and monuments may be purchased through the cemetery. A vault is required for both full body and cremated remains burial.

Above-Ground Burial

When making arrangements for above-ground burial, please contact the cemetery office as soon as possible to verify ownership/right of burial. Ownership must be established by submitting a copy of the Right of Interment (Deed).

Once right of burial has been established and the service date and time have been confirmed with the Church and funeral home, notify the cemetery accordingly. If you are coming from out of town and the funeral Mass has already occurred, simply schedule the date and time of the committal rite with the cemetery office. You are encouraged to invite a priest, deacon, or seminarian to conduct the committal rite. If you are unable to secure a minister for the service yourself, please notify the cemetery office and ask for assistance. Please allow as much time as possible for this process.

Prior to selecting a casket or urn, please refer to the size restrictions as outlined in the Rules and Regulations for Cedar Grove Cemetery as published on this site.

Trappist Caskets

Notre Dame Casket

Trappist Caskets, in partnership with the University of Notre Dame, offers custom-designed Notre Dame caskets and urns in addition to its standard line of individually crafted caskets and urns.

As a work of the monks of New Melleray Abbey, Trappist Caskets are built on a long tradition that combines a reverence for nature with a preference of old-world craftsmanship. The self-sufficient Trappist tradition calls for each monk to labor quietly with his hands in support of his life of prayer and simplicity. The result - expertly crafted caskets and urns made from the finest walnut and oak available, much of it coming from the monastery's own award-winning forest.

When your loved one is put to rest in a Trappist casket or urn, the monks will say a mass in their honor, and a tree will be planted in New Melleray's sustainable forest as a living memorial. Each casket and urn is blessed by a monk prior to delivery.
